We were discussing fancy homes and how nasty they can be, so thought I would share this one. Drove out to measure a million dollar plus home (1980s, so a million was real money). Big circle drive, tall columns, several acres of manicured lawn. They left it unlocked. When I walked in, floor was covered with fast food bags and wrappers. Trash everywhere. Dirty clothes all over the floor, even in the LR. No way to put a tape measure on the floor. Bathroom stools were black. Furniture was "early Salvation Army". Kitchen floor was sticky, moldy food in the dirty dishes in the sink. Trash cans running over. Dog feces on the floor. Wet spots of dog urine. Litter box had not been changed for a long time. Got nosy and looked in the fridge, green stuff growing in there. Said "no way" to myself and went home.

It was common in gated communities of high-dollar homes, to see one that had almost no furniture or junk furniture and a 20 year old car in the garage. I figured those people spent all their money on house payments. I remember a split-level, the HOs had been there for 5 years and the only thing in the lower level was an old sewing machine.

Not unusual, when labor was $3 yard to put in the "special", carpet, pad and labor for $10 yard in a fancy new house. And they would have to pay with a credit card.

When I first started we had a new dentist and his wife move into town [small town] and had the the highiest priced home built in town. It ended up they had a card table and chairs for a dining room table and chairs. Furnished the house as he earned it.

Sure it wasn't homeless or migrants living in the house?

Seen a lot of them.

Did a new house for husband and wife psychologists. She had to make sure that she could get enough cash advance off her credit card to pay me after she ordered $4,000 carpet. Woman was nuts. The great room was two stories tall. The back wall of it was all windows. Builder ripped that whole wall out twice because after it was done, exactly liked she asked, she changed her mind. The mantel and all the woodwork was walnut. He tore it out twice, on her dime, because she kept changing her mind. I didn't know until the day I started installing, if the back stairs would be wood or carpet. The brick layer was half done with the outside when she decided she didn't like the pattern she had picked. ....But the craziest, they had a three year old adopted daughter. She asked me to carpet over the stool hole so the upstairs bathroom would be safe for her. I suggested they put a lock on the door instead, she didn't like my idea. As concerned as she was about the girl, she put her in an upstairs bedroom by herself, and they slept downstairs.

Did a multi million dollar house owned by two bank presidents.

She had the roofers shingle 4 4x10 different color shingles , then they got in their helicopter to decide which one they liked .

All the other crews were installing all imported stuff that was ripped out and installed again.

I was the only one she didn't mess with .

The guy was really an odd duck. I worked in the house several times. Usually, just the maid was there. He was the major stockholder in a local bank but lived primarily in California. He would spend a week at a time in this place, five or six times a year. According to the full-time maid, she was there daily to tend to the birds he had, most of the time before he came back he would call her a few weeks ahead of time. She was to have the house repainted, carpet changed, drapes, all in colors to please his new GF. He had a different one every time. The maid not only got a full time salary, she got to keep the drapes, carpet and stuff that was taken out, most of which was only used for a few days. Last time I was there we carpeted the floor and walls of his billiard room. We could play pool while we were there, eat steaks and drink all the beer we wanted and he paid very well. The maid could write checks. She had a plum job.

That maid had a heck of a job. Sounds easy until he decided to come back. I hope he gave her enough notice to get all that done.

The maid was a well dressed, very intelligent woman probably in her 50s. She would always offer to fix lunch for us and tell us to help ourselves to the beer. She would leave when she was done and tell us to lock up.

I did an airplane hangar for the grandson of the founder of Mercury outboards
in St. Cloud , Florida back in 1984 with two other crews...the shop I worked out of booked us for a finders fee, and the guy paid us cash. It was a semi trailer full of commercial carpet

He had armed security feeding flocks of turkey, deer and hogs every evening out of trucks with bags of corn and sub zeros lined one half of a cafeteria with any beverage we wanted, food and he took us for a boat ride on "Lake X" a private testing ground for the Mercury outboard outfit. His biggest source of money we were told was other inventions like rod holders and such.

He tipped us huge in the end, my partner and I split five bills AFTER we over billed him and drank all his beer and ate all his food HA HA..he was quite a guy.

I've done other quite snotty rich people a neighbor of Bernie Little owner of Miss Budweiser (Stockton realty heir) had to carpet three floors and an Observatory with telescope, thirty foot water fall (had to install turf up to one side of this mammoth lava rock creation) and the guy had me purchase several carpet tractors so he could hide his floor safe's we put carpet over.

I had to build a swing that would hang from the spiral staircase in the center of the house so I could install full wrap individual stairs. It took me and another installer, two helpers three days to pad the house.
