The retailer called Stanton about a woven product called Royal Dutch. Synthetic woven product.
He told them a customer has 3/4" hardwood being installed in the home, but has a living room that will be hardwood, but the hardwood will only be on the room's perimeter. Carpet will be stretch in the center of the room. He told the person at Stanton that the sample board says the product is 13' 2" width............ he asks the tech person , "exactly how wide is the carpet?" The customer plans to allow the middle section of that living room to be 13 feet wide with one foot of hardwood on the perimeter of the room."

Stanton tech says the carpet's width is 13 feet 2 inches.
The retailer asks a second time: "So if he makes the opening area in the center of the room 13 feet wide, there will be 2 inches to trim off the edges, right?"
Stanton tech says yes.

So the customer had the wood guy complete the hardwood in that room's perimeter and it came out at 13 feet 3/8" Perfect, right? I'm still gonna have 1 5/8" to trim and tuck.

Well the carpet arrived this morning and I unrolled it a little and it didn't look much wider than the wood. I trimmed off the outer edge rows of neon blue (carpet is burgundy)
Damn....... It's 13' 3/8 of an inch wide, exactly the same as the wood to wood width. Anyone that has ever installed wovens knows this is a
"Houston, we have a problem" moment.
I had a 1/4" wide, 1/2" deep gully which I planned to tuck at least 3/8" of carpet into. ..on each side. That means I'm almost 3/4 of an inch shy of what I needed. :shooting:

I called the shop to tell em we had a "issue"
I then called Stanton to tell em we had a "issue"
I called the shop owner back to tell em the bad news from Stanton.......... He doubted it would stretch more than 8th of an inch, same thing that I initially told him. This is over felt pad by the way.

Ending my long rant here means that as of tonight, my new name is Helen Keller. :D You can thank 3 mill polyethylene plastic for that.

Have you made an attempt to stretch it in? Double strip and let it set for a day. Maybe even sprinkle a little H2O on it, just be careful the weft cords aren't natural fiber.
I did an ax job that was a`/4" of reaching. Didn't make it had to sew on a piece. :army:

It's done did, Daris. went in flawlessly. I'm Helen Keller now.:D
Double stripped and and it sat unrolled in the pre-heated warm and toasty room for 4 hours before I actually began stretching. In addition to the homes heating system, I had my space heater in the room too. Sweating like hell......... I was sweating bullets initially, but as I found my process was going to actually work........ well, ...just regular sweat. :D
I sealed the long sides with Orcon latex. I did edge sealing, then did about 1/2" of the backing and assisted it's drying with a hair dryer before positioning and beginning the stretch.
I mentioned the 3 mill plastic. I put two strips of 4' foot wide plastic under the carpet early on to assist in positioning. The carpet slides over the felt pad like greased butter when you do this. I left the plastic sheets under the carpet during the stretching process so the felt had literallyzero grab onto the carpet's back side.
When I got to stretching the length, I incrementally pulled the plastic sheeting out the end that I was stretching to. I only stretched the length one direction and I'm not one bit worried because with the plastic under it, it just wasn't necessary.

I stretched the width two directions with emphasis on getting the most carpet tucked into the gully at the two door openings, an 8 foot slider and a door to the hallway. There's only a foot of wood on 3 walls, so nobody is going to walk on any part of the sides except those two doorways. I'm totally happy and confident on how this room stretched in.
Here's the room. Left side of the room is a wall to wall cabinets for entertainment center stuff. That's why I only stretched the length one way.....towards the cabinetry. Sliding door is at the bottom and hallway door is top right.
I have a messy complicated MBR closet to do with the balance of the roll today. It's less than 8 by 13. I bet I spend most of the day in there. The closet is gonna be harder than this large room was.

In the Width ?
Yup, the room's inset for carpet is 13' 3/8" in width and 18 feet long.

Daris, I can't tell for sure just from memory, but the carpet might have jute weft cords. I'll check. If so, I'm gonna warn the customer about ever having this carpet steam cleaned. An untrained carpet cleaner could shrink this room by 2 inches. :D

I think the bordered room with wood or tile and carpet in the field is atrocious looking.

I was gonna say why trim off the blue salvedge as you coulda used it too tuck? If it didn't work the mill would have had an out.

Thought about that but "if" a tiny bit of blue showed....... it would be like a neon sign. So I decided to cut off the blue selvage for 6 feet on both sides so I could do a test stretch to see how it behaved. I was surprised how it behaved. Didn't stretch much, but more than I thought. I figured the best option was to be sure the doorway areas had enough to tuck for durability sake, and the rest of the edges could survive with slightly less material tucked in.
I sealed the back and the edges of the material for 1/2" with the Orcon sealer. With two rows of strip, it's not going anywhere.
I shimmed the tackstrip slightly so the carpet is about 1/4 inch above the wood. I was initially planning on shimming it higher. That would have created more of an issue with the carpet's width. The wood to carpet height transition turned out perfect. Glad I didn't go any higher. It was scary, but worked out very well. :camping:

Why not test stretch it prior to cutting it off? Oh well, glad it worked for ya.

I told the rep what I'd planned to do and he said, "Sounds like a plan, Stan"
......OK, that's not what he said. :D He agreed this was my only option. The part I trimmed for testing would have ended up in the master bedroom closet anyhow. It was 7'+ by 12'
This was my only work for the week. Woulda made a big sucking sound had I not made a go at it.
