This pattern will not center equally on both lower and upper stairs. .......what to do, ....what to do.
Pattern is a Millikan geometric called Linkage Blackstone.
My sketch does not resemble the Millikan carpet...... just a diagram for illustration purposes.
There is a single large bedroom at the top of the stair case. Most of the time, and by most house guests, the carpet will only be seen from the downstairs viewpoint which would of include the riser on the landing. Should I center the pattern on the lower stairs and landing riser and just let the upper stairs fall wherever they fall?
........or center the upstairs section too, and let it misalign with the landing?

The carpet is similar to this.......... heck maybe this is it. The sample was small so this isn't quite what I thought it looked like............ more squares than these rectangular shapes. Oh well, either way this is the color. The black lines are 13 inches apart and that ends up with the lines being a couple inches off on the upper stairway if I center the lower stairs and landing.

If it's for a customer, I suggest asking them what they prefer.

What does the homeowner say? You could always cut the landing in the middle and shift it so it makes the pattern line up like the lower stairs. Just a thought.
I was thinking that, but you'd need to remove one black stripe in the middle of the landing and that would move the whitish squares closer together making it noticeable. The whites might even touch. I need to go to the warehouse and unroll the carpet and tape it off to see what will happen.
I made some accurate measurements of the landing and stairs a couple weeks ago when I drove down to look at the job.
Here's the actual pattern. The colors are close to this, but I think the black lines are slightly more prominent.

You're being difficult Daris. :D
No, not quite understanding it. The patern isn't exactly square (the squares aren't actually square)
The black lines measure 11 inches in roll width, but approximately 10 1/2" 10 5/8" in the roll length.
The landing is 79 1/2 inches wide, so the 11 inch pattern lines end up at 77 inches. maybe it will stretch 2 1/2 inches. o_O
The steps are 37 1/2" wide. If I center the landing, that's 1 1/4 out of whack on each run. Not sure if that will work with the contrast of the white and black. It will look offset for sure even after stretching.
........then again, maybe if I center the steps, and center the landing, the misalignment at the top stair tread and the landing's riser won't be all than noticeable.

....oh, and about mitering.............. there is a tall and 4 foot wide window on that landing right at floor level, so mitering might cause a huge color difference.

I made a pattern of the landing so the customer could see different positions of the carpet pattern when I shifted it one way or the other. It's gonna be centered on the lower stair set and up onto the landing, then go up the 7 upper stairs however the pattern ends up. The lighter color isn't as light as I first thought and the pattern is busy enough it will look fine. I have the option of centering the upper stairs if it looks better that way even if the pattern doesn't match up. Maybe it will look good even when it's mis-matched. Won't know till tomorrow when I install it.
