I haven't read them for 15 or more years and wondering if much has changed.

I'm older now and don't really care anymore about the fine print. I just do what I do above and beyond the 'basics' every chance I get. I know what's wrong, so right is pretty obvious.
.......with the exception being patterned stairways. :D

Many moons ago when I first discovered there were actual installation standards, after reading them, I found I was doing almost everything mentioned. With years of experience, and knowing whats supposed to be done, you also know when the rules can be broken without harming the installation. aka: common sense.
 
If you intentionally break the rules the carpet police will find you and give you major rug burn.
Haven't seen Barney Fife in all my years of flooring........ he don't scare me, cause he'd probably get a paper cut pulling out his note pad and bleed all over the new carpet.
