Messed up and installed the wrong pad in two rooms. 15 miles out of town and I got to the point of unrolling the carpet and fill piece. Got a text from the customer that the pad was the wrong one and she had ordered in some "good" pad. The pad I installed was some Karastan 7/16" #8 pad. It's a really nice rebond.
Anyhow, that carpet is a bazzillian ounce nylon carpet and I can barely shake the long 27 foot living room run sideways. Too heavy to shake air under it.
In order to salvage the pad, I needed to remove it and wrap it up carefully so I wasted most of the day doing the pad R&R. I cut 1 1/2" from the seam edges so there weren't any staples or staple marks in the pad I was rolling up. It's about 69 inches wide now with better than factory edges. I used a pad knife so the cuts were straight and clean, then I wrote the length on each roll and wrapped them up in shrink tape. They look so professional. and purdy. :)
99% of the pad sold by this Carpet One store is the Karastan 9/17" 8lb rebond pad. They don't even stock the lighter weights.............. not even for apartment contracts. I made the mistake of hauling out this 8lb pad to the customers house without stopping at the shop for a work order. No money in this job in the first place. Makes my week a total waste.............. Grrrr at myself.

Thats not so bad. When I was working for a shop a crew went to the wrong house and the guy said come on in. They installed the carpet which was already paid for. Guy got free carpet. hehehe

We went to a home and had the wrong address. They were tract homes, all alike. Door was unlocked. Installed underlayment and vinyl in the kitchen. Store owner never contacted them, afraid he would get sued.

I installed carpet wrong in 4 houses in one day. They were all bathrooms in the 60's. Then 20 years later did a complete house that was the wrong house. Had 2 addresses and a house description and went with the description. Ended up the HO had bought the 1st house and the basement leaked so switched to the house around corner. The layouts were identical and moved the carpet around corner. Had to leave pad and strip down or repair all the floors.

4 houses in one day?
Took me 4 hours to cut, seal, pre-stretch and make a 26 foot and a 14 foot seam today.

This one cost me a day's labor. (mine are 5) This is literally the first time I (almost) screwed up a job in 22 years.
.............and that job was the same pad issue. Matter of fact the exact same pad.
That one was 80 miles out of town, so it hurt even worse.
Note to self: Stop screwin' up so often. :)

Had I completed the job without the customer being there, they wouldn't have known the pad was wrong, and I wouldn't have known the pad was wrong. .....and the expensive pad feels the same to me as the 8 lb pad.
I'm just glad I hadn't gotten the carpet 1/2 done before discovering my screwup.
