When I measure up a house, I sketch up the rooms and make a lot of exact measurements. Looks messy at the time, but all I need are the measurements.
When I get home, I draw things up on graph paper somewhat to scale to better understand the layout and where the fills will come from. I make measurements down to the 1/2" in my sketches. If you round everything up, then later when drawing the actual layout you can sometimes need an extra inch or two. If you round things up, you don't usually remember the true measurements.
This job is a good month off, and making a diagram of the rooms and cuts makes it easier to remember how to chop up the roll for the sizes I will need to cut. I went a bit overboard on this one.
..........because knowbody can stop me. :p

I do a drawing but not scaled. I always make sure I know how much I need before I leave the property, but I pretty much have a photographic memory. I was only short one time in all the years I have done this. I can drive past a house now that I did 20 years ago and tell you what I did and how the rooms are shaped.

I just take the measurements , Plus the fills .. I don't get paid to get fancy like you .. :D
I don't get paid for doing this either, but otherwise I'd be twiddling my thumbs and not getting paid for that.
This impresses the customer and the shop.
Hi I do the same thing. Used to ddrive my ex boss nuts. But doing that way you know if you missed a crucial measurement and can figure it in by the scaled drawing.
The upstairs bedroom "suite" is gonna be interesting to stretch. (it's the image showing the steps) Having the image lets me run the procedure through my noggin' long before the job is ready. I'm gonna be making a lot of back and forth stretcher movements on that room.
When the job is ready, I'll be ready.

My photographic memory is done with negatives instead of positives. I need all the help I can get. I forget the password on my online backing sometimes. Had the same password for 5+ years.
