People think its hard to vote today? Look at 1850 to 1900. Imagine how much effort they had to put out. I bet a lot harder, you know, riding a horse 5 miles through the snow.............. uphill both ways.

I haven't kept up on the post and only read the last couple of pages.
The caravan that people are getting worked up about is nowhere near our border yet. It will be months before they reach bc they are moving on foot. It is not some mass invasion. It's not like the Mariel boat lift where Castro just sent over the criminals and loonies. I was aware and do care that it is an abuse of the military, a waste of time, and a waste of money to send them to the border now. They are coming from Guatemala to seek asylum. The proper procedure would be to give them medical exams and go through the vetting process. Back in Guam we would get boats with 50+ Chinese immigrants coming ashore or trying to land. They would be rounded up, fed, provided showers & clean clothes, given medical treatment/exams, & held in a facility with better conditions than the fish holds they came over in. Anyone contagious was put in quarantine (a LOT of them had TB) and treated. Sure it was expensive, but it was less expensive than the whole child-grab operation they have going & less expensive in the long run than deploying the military. The pulled funds from FEMA for the child-grab crap.
Meanwhile we have mass voter suppression. Shutting down all but 1 voting place in the area & moving it out of reach of public transportation and having it serve over $13k people. Voting machines switching votes from Democrats to Republicans in Texas. Over 400k people kicked off the voter rolls in Indiana. Mass voter suppression & cheating in progress. I was fortunate that I was able to get to the early voting place (which wasn't easy to find) and place my vote last month. I was annoyed at one of the items on the ballot: To decide whether or not people in this state could spend real $ to gamble on FANTASY football. Not even real sports, but fantasy sports. W T F? There are so many more important issues...

Sending the military is supposed to sent a message. If we don't send a message, then .......................... we are sending a message. That message being "trample all over us we don't have borders"
That kind of military expenditure cost about 2 seconds of the annual budget. The employment cost of those military personnel already exists, so deduct that from the transportation costs or just call it a military preparedness maneuver. Dust in the wind, not an expense.

We have Border Patrol agents and other law enforcement agencies to handle it. These are unarmed men, women, children, and infants who are on a long journey to seek asylum through legal means. They aren't violent insurgents rushing the border. They are walking at a slow pace and won't be at the border for months. So bringing the military in months before arrival is pointless. Particularly because these refugees are unlikely to have access to social media & news. They are unlikely to even know about the military waiting. Now, if there was evidence that the "caravan" was armed and they were within days of reaching the border, I *might* see justifying the military-- but the military isn't really trained to handle refugees. The Border Patrol *is* trained for it. There could be some misunderstandings with military involvement and it could turn ugly. Besides, what the refugees are doing is not illegal. The legal way to seek asylum is to come to the border and speak with officials to formally request asylum.
The talk of them being this dangerous force rushing the border is total BS meant to cause fear & incite hatred against the refugees and people who defend them. These people will probably be absolutely exhausted when they finally reach the border. I just hope that no nutjobs rise to the fearmongering and try to take matters in to their own hands (although I've heard there are groups of armed citizens who plan to go fight the refugees). The people from Guatemala are fleeing attempts at ethnic cleansing & racial persecution. Many of them were going to be killed if they didn't leave.

First of all, remember The First Amendment? “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."
The Bible has been "banned" from public schools in America for as long as we have been a country. If you want to go live in a theocracy move to Yemen or Saudi Arabia. The rise of secularism is due to a number of things, none of which is due to the Bible not being taught in public schools. The Bible wasn't taught in public schools in 1918 or 1818 either, but more people were affiliated with some sort of Christian denomination back then despite the fact that the government did not force them to read the Bible. Christianity and its adherents need to make their Church and their faith more relevant and more welcoming to people of this country today.
Instead today's Christians - especially the Evangelicals and the Fundamentalists have made the mistake of affiliating themselves with the republican party. The result is that Christians come off as the people who would rather see the elderly starve than support things like meals on wheels; they'd rather see children die than support the ACA; they'd rather that our cities be filled with throngs of the homeless rather than support affordable housing programs - on and on. Evangelicals also support a president who is a bully and a liar and who has had multiple marriages and multiple high profile liaisons with porn stars and Playboy models. All of this is in direct contradiction to the teachings of Christ who said, "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
As a result Christians come off as hypocrites and in fact, many Evangelicals ARE hypocrites. I would suggest that Christians search their own hearts before imposing the Bible on Americans by government fiat

If they are all going to stand in line and apply for asylum, I don't have much of a problem with it.
How will they prove they were going to die in their home country? What if everyone coming says that? What if most of them are just poor? So are 5 billion other people.
.......what about most of them that just say they were fleeing persecution of one kind or another?
The military needs to be there as a show of force. If nothing happens, that's great. I don't personally think there gonna be anything big. If there are issues, should we just suddenly deploy some troops... spur of the moment kinda deal? That's insane. No way are there enough spare border patrol agents that we can send to one place and still have enough left at their regular locations. Not having a military presence in this situation would in my opinion be insane. If it's not needed... and it probably won't be, then that's great.
People are making a big deal about nothing. I don't know what's behind this "caravan" but no way in heck way it funds itself. I mean who buys all the new shoes? food? water? sanitation? All these things are huge considering their months of traveling.......and it's kinda funny they want to move to this hateful, racist, bigoted country that doesn't want them. How many countries did they pass along the way? Why didn't they stop or why weren't they allowed asylum in those countries?
......and they know exactly the situation they are heading into. They are not blind to the news. They may not have cell phones, but they talk to people in cities they travel through that do........ no way they are ignorant of what lies ahead. They know.

No offense, but if anyone believes these folks are walking through 2 different countries because they are fearful of being killed have consumed too much koolaid. These folks want to come into our country, get free medical aid, and join our welfare system AND when they start popping out kids, they will become legal immigrants.
We can't even take care of our own, so why should we care of others?

I wish these people that claim persecution would rise up against their government and have a good old civil war like we did. Ours turned out pretty well. Not saying all that death was a good thing, but look at our country today. I wonder how close Iran is to civil war They hate their government more than they hate us.
