I set it at 1/4 same as the carpet...............looked a lot better than the existing 5/8. :D
I only replaced 25 feet of strip on this job to fix the side with the buckles. I wasn't about to re-do the entire jobThankfully the opposite walls held OK. Ideally all the strip on the job I fixed should have been pulled and replaced with tri-tack with the proper gap.

You can tap the carpet over the strip with a rubber hammer and it will even out any bumps from the pins. You gotta use the right pad for double stripping and not getting a picture frame. There isn't a way to compare this woven material with an equally thin commercial looped pile carpet. It like comparing brick and bamboo.
I've told the store owners over and over that it's not carpet............. they just don't get it.

I have not done a woven in forever. They want to pay $4 yard here, no thanks.
$15 would barely be worth the effort even if the layout was relatively simple.
Just my trimming and replacing a bit of tackstrip came between $2.50 and $3 per yard. I didn't cut or haul the carpet or do any seams or pad. It took two guys 2 1/2 days for less than $700. +removal and hauling off the old stuff, so add another 80 to 100 bucks. I told the guy if it takes 3X as long to install as regular carpet, it's $15 per yard, not $7 .

I used one for 30 years on low knap and berbers.
Quarter inch was my minimum for everything.
