Holy crappola, how did I not think of that one? ....that was one that had me trying to figure out whether to miter The landings or to keep the pattern running the same direction. David talked me into running the carpet all the same direction thus making me do 35 ft of hand sewing. He tricked me into doing it but the customers carpet made me look better than I am. That was for the VP of Boeing. I think that was my only brush with greatness but I never met him. He was always out of town at work and so I dealt with her. I don't think he was all concerned about which direction the carpet laid anyway. 😁 I've got photos but they're on my laptop and if I can figure out a way to do it I'll remind you how it turned out.
I think it was later after I left TFP that she called me up and wanted to add a second runner to the stairs in the entry. I think those were about 6 ft wide and her husband bought her a 3 ft wide Turkish runner from Turkey.... Imagine that. 😁
Those steps had two piece stair rods. Took me a while to figure it out but I bought half inch cold rolled steel and custom bent some stair rods so that it would look right with the two carpet profiles.
I get some fun stuff once in awhile don't I? 😵‍💫

This is a marble staircase? Marble is very soft—- I bet cement tack would hold like a champ——it would destroy the marble of course—— my recommendation would be tailored with no pad——carpet glue on treads and contact cement on risers

Hi rugaddict, the last marble runner we did the polisher came first and was able to restore the marble that had tkls construction adhesive, but maybe it wasn’t Master Weld, probably not way back then. Might have been liquid nail ? So are you saying if We use master weld, when removed in the future, the marble will not be able to be restored ? Thx !

David talked you into ‘ same direction’ So just to cnfm , that would be the top right diagram ? Length over nose on vertical stairs and width over nose on horizontal flights and three landings ?
Yep all the carpet went the same direction. The carpet runner was only about 24 or 28 in wide. We of course ordered a lot of extra material to salvage from.
Using some of that extra, after trimming off the border and matching the pattern, made me sew on a second seam, parallel to and four or five inches away from the nose of the step....... Yes the seam was parallel to and on the landing, not over the nose of the step on the riser. That scared the hell out of me but there was absolutely no other way because the field pattern was so small on this runner.
It's been there quite a few years now and still holding up as far as I know. It was sewn with a lot of love and latex.
........hmmm, that sounded sorta creepy 😁

The reason the carpet was not mitered from corner to corner is because the medallion in the center was not round, nor diamond shaped. A diagonal miter would not create a symmetrical pattern.
I made two test pieces one oriented all the same direction and one with the miter. I let the homeowner decide which looked the best and I discussed what the options would be as to the seam locations.

That sounds like good advise, as this building is commercial not residential, so now the brain is buffering, and considering a change of plans. Just need to work through pros and cons w/ or w/out pad and even the dblstk option. O- boy ! Buffering 😳

I tried but with no success 😡 here’s a few pics of bound straight sts + rough cut curved pie sts, each won is slightly diff. So I’ll shape / bind on- site........ I was hoping rugaddict would get back to us/ me on confirming that YES ! He has experienced that the urethane construction adhesive will permanently damage the marble / Granite, since I’m leaning towards tack and pad method. Just trying to get as many 🦆 in a row before install day.

Where’s the edit post button ? 😖

How often do you use the serpentine straight edge..... as often as I do? 😁
Glad I don't do binding. I used a stapler on a couple jobs and hand sewed a14 by 26 foot rug once......
customer requested it. 🤬

Worked a half day today and got 4 sts done.... Hey Daris and all, should I do a full sewn bull nose, with the seam 1/2” over the nose, since the Carpet is really stiff 😡

Got 5 sts and 80 % of the landing done today 🐢 🐢 Turtle carpet man is crawling alone 😳 ....... Does anyone remember what topic it was where the Australian installer cut 1” strips along the tread to form a curved look on a pie shaped step. I need to re-visit his YouTube video
