Stairs were my favorite part of a job. Loved the double wrapped ones.
Ahhh memories… this was about 40 years ago… I still have a headache from all the contact…

Spent 3 days tearing off and redoing a set another guy screwed up.

When I was in KC, did several winding staircases in Victorian homes. Other installers would do the flatwork and I did the stairs.

I haven’t touched rug for years so I’m definitely out of the loop on pricing. What is the going rate for stairs these days anyway. I don’t remember stairs ever being a real money maker given the time they took to do. I was just happy if I didn’t lose money. I recall being offered many an otherwise sweet job if I was willing to do the stairs for cheap, or even for free.

For those of you that don’t strip the sides, if stairs paid more would that make a difference as to whether or not you stripped the sides? For those of you that do strip the sides, if stairs paid less would that make a difference as to whether or not you continued to strip the sides.

I did not strip the sides because to me it did not look as good. On normal stairs, the pad was cut back on the sides and the carpet rolled under. It made a better edge. Stairs cut net tended to ravel. When I first started, there was no extra for stairs unless they were upholstered. Later on, they paid $2 a step.

I'm at $20 a stair for regular ol stairs.
$50 a stair for tailored stairs.....

Still don't want to do any carpet!!!

So a flight of 13 or 14 basic waterfall stairs pays $260 or $280?
Would never make that here. But I made so much on flatwork, that I could afford to do stairs cheap. I was an indepedent, charged more than anyone in the area and still had to turn down work. There was only 3 of us in this area and I repaired a lot of their stuff. After the other two died and I retired. well the stores here could use some installers.

Sure, or more doing designer work with a Wiltons or an Axminister.

Pricing varies greatly depending on who your working for and what you’re working with. Doing track homes with standard carpet they paid dirt and wanted steps for free. I gave up working for those builders long ago.

When I started stairs were just part of the job, when I etired straight steps were still part of the job. Upholstered now that was a different story. If I remember right spindles was .50 and 2.50 per end. Curved waterfall bullnose $100. Cap and band was free.

Pretty much the same here. Steps were just yardage.

So you got 100 bucks to sew on the riser but only 50 cents to cut around a spindle and 2.50 to wrap and cap it… Yikes! That’s a pretty extreme difference.
