So in Pittsburgh PA i run into this alot. Oak floors only stained and sealed around the edges of floor. Middle is raw. It looks as though it was done around a large area rug that was tacked into place. Of course rug is long gone and has been wall to wall carpet for years. Ive refinished these lots of times and the distinct square always stays. No matter what ive tried. Seems to be the best just to clear coat. But customers always want stain. I cant find anything online about this. Anyone else familiar with this?

It was left unfinished for rugs be it carpet or lino. Wood darkens with age and being covered the wood doesn't get the light so the exposed darkens plus whatever the edge that is sealed also darkens it.
Thanks! Any luck getting thevring out i never have been able to get it fully out

The exposed wood around the perimeter has been walked on, had the grain and pores of the wood crushed as well as being exposed to contaminants for umpteen years while the center of the floor has been protected by a rug. Just like the halo effect, the stain is accepted and absorbed differently around the perimeter than it is in the center of the room.

Could you keep sanding until you hit all new fresh wood that is consistent throughout the room? How about glazing the floor? That’s when you add color to the finish as opposed to staining the wood itself. What is your customer’s reaction to the halo? I suspect that if you live in an old ass house that you would be more accepting of things like this situation.
