I don't understand how anyone could misread the 2nd,

We had just defeated a very oppressive government. The framers trusted no one.
They wanted to make sure that if our new government became oppressive that we would be able to overthrow it. So they made sure we could own guns. Really, quite simple.
And they used the term "militia" because at that time all free men were the militia

According to the United States Department of Justice...

*An estimated 3.7 million burglaries occurred each year on
average from 2003 to 2007.

*A household member was present in roughly 1 million burglaries
and became victims of violent crimes in 266,560 burglaries.

266,560 burglaries... a minimum of one victim per criminal act...

But by all means, fear being a victim of a mass shooting. That's like being afraid of a shark attack when you're more likely to die in an auto accident.

According to the CDC there were 39,773 deaths by guns in 2017. As there are approximately 320,0000,000 people in this country, that means you had a 0.00012% chance of dying on the wrong end of a gun in 2017.

But wait... 60% of that 40K number are suicides, cutting that already minuscule chance more than in half if you aren't planning on offing yourself.

Consider too that gun violence is NOT evenly distributed across the country... your chances of being a victim of gun violence are not as bad in Pocatello, ID as they are in Detroit, MI for example.

So... since you can decide to not shoot yourself in the head and decide to not hang out in the hood and/or participate in criminal activities you can easily limit your gun violence risk exposure level to statistically irrelevant levels, say 0.0000012%

Every victim of a violent death is unacceptable and regrettable but damn... those are long odds and would suggest we're hardly experiencing an unprecedented epidemic of carnage as you suggest.

What America IS suffering from is an epidemic of irrational fear which is capitalized on by those who would control your (and my) lives through the directed application of fear.... the same tactic used by the sheep herder when he sends his sheepdogs out to steer the herd in into the desired location

https://jewscanshoot.com/2018/10/28/...hooter-events/

Of all the active shooter events there were 33 at which an armed citizen was present. Of those, Armed Citizens were successful at stopping the Active shooter 75.8% of the time (25 incidents) and were successful in reducing the loss of life in an additional 18.2% (6) of incidents. In only 2 of the 33 incidents (6.1%) was the Armed Citizen(s) not helpful in any way in stopping the active shooter or reducing the loss of life."

"If you isolate just the events at which 8 or more people were killed the data paints a different picture (pie chart on the bottom). In these incidents, 77.8% took place in a gun-free zone suggesting that gun free zones lead to a higher death rate vs active shooter events in general."

"One of the final metrics we thought was important to consider is the potential tendency for armed citizens to injure or kill innocent people in their attempt to “save the day.” A common point in political discussions is to point out the lack of training of most armed citizens and the decrease in safety inherent in their presence during violent encounters.
As you can see below, however, at the 33 incidents at which Armed Citizens were present, there were zero situations at which the Armed Citizen injured or killed an innocent person. It never happened."

“I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida ... to go to court would have taken a long time,” Trump said at a meeting with lawmakers on school safety and gun violence.
“Take the guns first, go through due process second,” Trump said.

Might I add corporate welfare in the form of tax laws that benefit corporate vs citizens, and the 1% paying less taxes than middle and lower classes? Is that socialism? Is that capitalism or greed perpetrated by the corporations and people in congress and president who are paid money by way of dishonest election campaign laws so that they can enrich themselves while in office taking money under the table. Capitalism at is worst.

Sorry bout that, I injected a wrong link Ern.
It was supposed to be about another stupid gun law requiring people to reveal to the government their social media accounts as part of a background check before being allowed to have a gun.

Like people are going to volunteer that information. LOL Never going to happen. Unless other people turn you in for posting crazy shit online.

There have been multiple murders in my town just in recent years. Most of them were shootings. There were also some "accidental" shooting deaths. Just a couple of weeks ago one of my brother's friends walked outside & witnessed a murder (some dude rolled up in a car, got out, shot someone in the head, got back in and drove off & turned himself in to the cops). My brother's friend has been staying inside playing sports video games ever since.

There are some people who have no business owning or carrying guns who are carrying bc people don't do background checks. I know people who are prohibited from owning guns who still have them. They are trying to pass a voluntary "no sell list" here. Where people who feel they might harm others or might be suicidal ask to be put on the no sell list and can have themselves removed at a later point, but it takes at least a week. But, part of the problem with people who are mentally ill is that they don't always realize it and might not think it is necessary- which is why a lot of them stop taking their meds even though they need them.
