One thing is for sure, we're gonna find out how much stuff comes from China that we weren't paying attention to.
I don't have a clue as to what the tariff is on exactly. The retail price of the goods? Wholesale price?
The 25% isn't forever anyway, just a bargaining tactic. He who hurts most will cave.
 
Years ago here the people who worked in manufacturing plants for cars, TV etc bought imported cars and TVs from Japan as they were cheaper than NZ made. Results most manufacturing plants shut as nobody were buying NZ made products. Those people working in those manufacturing plants now do not have jobs
Seems we cant have cheap products and full employment
 
You guys do realize, we are the ones paying the tariffs. It means an increase in the cost of everything from China. They say a new washing machine will go up $100 as an example. Many car parts come from there. Some flooring comes from there. Our hog farmers are already struggling and sales will slump. They will drop production and prices will rise. American importers pay 25% more on imports and will pass the cost on to us.

We are already paying the price for all our manufacturing disappearing. Except the ones able to play the stock market. Rich people could care less as long as they can profit from wall street.
I am devoted to paying more for American made products. People who think it's a great deal to pay $100 less for a china made dishwasher are kidding themselves.
We pay for unemployment insurance and welfare for all those out of work people. Oh wait, but not corporate America! They don't pay taxes, we do. And we are shooting ourselves in the foot letting corporate America screw the little guys.
 
I haven't been able to find what the 25% applies to and what doesn't.
Before they were 10% and 8% on some products, so it's a temporary change of 15% increase on certain imports. If a $50 pair of shoes or microwave oven goes up to $57 I'll survive. Can't even buy a 6 pack for $7.
 
......and like Ernesto just mentioned, if the price of a shoe went up to $57, could America make em for that or close to it? Probably, but I don't ever see the shoe market coming back here since the clothing industry is 98% everywhere but here. That would be a hard come back.
The powers that be will negotiate something and I bet sooner than later.

Back when I could afford boots, I bought Danners. Made of leather with a Goretex liner. The were guaranteed waterproof for either 2 or 4 years at that time. In the late 80's I bough my first pair.......... $225 :eek:
Hello Mastercard. :D I didn't have to break them in because they felt comfy from the get go. Warranty was void if you oiled them. Bought another pair 10 years later. Them were my photo taking boots.
 
Here's one reason for the current tariff war. .........and why China doesn't buy many US cars. It's called ridiculous tariffs.

BEIJING — A Jeep Wrangler can cost $30,000 more in China than in the United States — and the reasons illustrate a growing point of tension between the two countries.

Manufactured in Toledo, Ohio, the Wrangler is a descendant of the jeeps that were used by American forces in World War II. Equipped with a 3.6-liter engine and a five-speed automatic transmission, the Rubicon edition of the Wrangler has a suggested retail price of $40,530 in the United States.

But in China, the same vehicle would set a buyer back by a hefty $71,000, mostly because of taxes that Beijing charges on every car, minivan and sport utility vehicle that is made in another country and brought to China’s shores.

And GM, although it is the first of the Big Three automakers to produce a Chinese import, is not alone in exploiting this latest tweak to the global auto supply chain. Earlier this month, Ford announced that it would be moving production of the Ford Focus entirely from the US to China, where it already makes the cars for Chinese buyers, starting in 2019.

But while these production shifts make perfect business sense for US automakers — enabling them to lower production costs and at the same time locate production closer to a huge market — they risk incurring political blowback.

President Trump’s administration has said it would try to level the playing field with China and its treatment of US automakers. They pay 25 percent import taxes to reach Chinese consumers, while foreign carmakers pay just 2.5 percent to access the US market.
And Trumps response?

“Any business that leaves our country for another country, fires its employees, builds a new factory or plant in the other country, and then thinks it will sell its products back into the US without retribution or consequences is WRONG!,” Trump tweeted in December.

He is so, so right on this one.
Of course not all products have high tariffs, but the ones that do need to be changed.
 
A few years back, I went to a well know soft side cooler company to get a replacement for my boat cooler, who claims to be made in the USA. They allowed me in the back and saw every cooler was inside a wax feeling Chinese box. When I opened it up, the label said "Made in the USA"!

Know a guy that told me about being inside a wood mill in China. He said he saw tons of boxes that had "Made in USA" printed on them. He said they would fill the boxes, stack them on pallets, then shrink wrap them with a yellow plastic and place a made in China sticker on the outside of the shrink wrap. Once it landed in the USA and cleared customs, guess where the yellow shrink wrap went?
 
Kamala Harris, one of the candidates for president, said that if elected she would ban the import of AR 15s. That would be a neat trick since about 99% of them are made in the USA.

Thats fraud. Call the FTC hotline number. And if your a competitor you can sue.

New York City’s Transport Ban Fails All Heightened Scrutiny The Liberal Gun Club Issues an Amicus Brief in favor of the Plaintiff

Today The Liberal Gun Club issued an Amicus Brief to the Supreme Court in support of the petitioners in the case of new York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc., v. The City of New York and the New York City Police Department- License Division, which challenges a law that unconstitutionally restricts when and where New York City residents can transport their firearms. New York City’s transport ban fails all heightened scrutiny and substantially burdens the lawful conduct of citizens.

As has been found in a recent case regarding safe and legal abortions, laws that restrict the rights of citizens must be narrowly tailored to be the least intrusive means of serving the governments interest. In the current case before the court the law has been used as a bludgeon rather than as a scalpel, resulting in the inability of NYC Citizens to transport their firearms in any manner, whether it be to their second home or training class, putting them at unnecessary risk and unable to gain levels of proficiency that all other states, including those that have heavy regulation, are available to them.

This law also prevents the citizens of New York City from carrying their firearm in the other 38 states that they could otherwise carry in, if not for this law, applying their laws nationally, regardless of local regulations.

In addition, although it’s not found in the brief, this law misses addressing the root causes of violence by a mile. Rather than working on the real issues behind violence such as toxic masculinity, the generational oppression of minorities, and a lack of universal healthcare, including mental health care, this law is used as a way to substantially impact those gun owners who abide by the law.

My partner at work left my department and rose through the ranks of the Department of Justice, and finally make the chief of police for Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, working under Kamela Harris. He said the working conditions with Harris at the helm was so bad, that after a few years, he needed to quit. She is an off the wall liberal, with he brain filled with fantasies of liberal takeover.
 
Narcotic enforcement is a joke anyways. Both sides look the other way as big Pharma sells opiates to anyone and anyone legally. Then when the can't get their script filled they go to the street and buy heroin.
Tell me how the billions of dollars in drug enforcement we give countries in S. America has been working for us all these 30 -40- years we have been giving away money to the crooked officials down there?
