Southern lights? Oh, you mean the ones that appear mostly in fall and winter? Usually shining on deer?

Seen em here once in my life Jon. My TV reception was so bad that night I checked on a "space weather" website and it showed real time auroral activity way south like I never seen. It was foggy at home and in town, so I packed my camera and tripod and headed out in search of somewhere without fog.
I drove out to a road towards the beach north of me and driving south, I thought I spied something, so I got out and set up the camera facing due west. This was 11pm or later. The sky was clear, the stars were out, but I could spot a very faint reddish glow brightening and fading. I took a few images with some 200 speed Kodak film. I did, 15 seconds, 30 seconds a minute and maybe two minutes.
The photo shows up a lot more than I could see with my nekid eye.
It was weird too, the air smelled funny because of this.
The second shot is an electrical insulator arcing a bit.
Looking east on my return trip, I spotted a reddish glow that direction too.
Probably never gonna see this where I live ever again. We're way too far south.

This image was taken facing north. There aren't any city lights looking this direction, just sand dunes. Again, it's a long exposure, maybe 30 seconds. and again it wasn't this intense to me nekid eye, but it was definitely visible because the sky was way to light for nearly midnight. It was a moonless night.

It would for sure. For them to appear where I live on a chart of 9 being the highest intensity, we need a 10+, so I don't ever expect to see them here again................. heck, I could barely see the one that I saw.
