A couple questions about Ditra uncoupling membrane. First, for you guys with real world experience with this, does Ditra really noticeably work in preventing cracked tiles and grout lines? I know every situation is different, but on the whole, does it work as promoted? And second, they recommend modified thinset from subfloor to membrane, and unmodified from membrane to tile? Why is this required, there must be a good reason. Thanks.

I used Ditra in my daughter basement bath remodel. The tile supply house had a mastic that would work on both surfaces. Job has been done about 8 years ago and still going strong. I'm thinking the mastic was called Ditramate. Oh I'm not a tiler.

Because the modified helps it stick to the substrate. So then you only need unmodified to stick to the membrane. And it's made for unmodified on top. Its sticks like crazy. Also used for exterior applications.
It will raise the height a bit.
Make sure you back butter tiles.
