I want to replace my carpet with a theater carpet, like the attached picture. Can anyone point me to a store(s) to purchase/install such carpet in Austin, TX area? Also, can carpet be installed around a step like this? I noticed all steps with a carpet has a small bullnose overhang, but this step doesn't. Do I need add the bullnose overhang or can they carpet around it without it? Thank you.

I would find a store that sold wool carpet. Not all do but they may have the installers and product that your looking for. We have that same pattern in our showroom and it has been through a fire.

Hi all. Update. Because Incognito (thank you!) linked "Joy Carpets," I ended up doing a search for for "joy carpets" and Lowes showed up in search results. Using that link, bunch of products showed up! I stopped by a Lowe's store and scheduled a measure and estimate. The measure and estimate is $35 which gets credited toward the final purchase price if I purchase the carpet/install from Lowes. That happened yesterday and now just waiting on the quote. The guy said it usually takes 24-48 hours for the estimate. What's weird is, I browsed on Lowe website for a long time before and these carpets didn't show up on their website. Same at HD's website.

Also, I emailed Joy Carpets and they responded the same day with three local retailers that carry their products. If Lowe's estimate doesn't work out, I'll contact those retailers, but most likely, Lowe's will do the install. It's just a one room (19x19) install with one step. The guy did mention that step in the picture is not a problem to install carpet around it.

Thank you everyone for your help!

I’m not gonna tell you to NOT go to Lowes for your carpet installation but I will certainly tell you to think twice about it before you go to Lowes for your carpet installation.

Statistically speaking you should be alright but it’s when something doesn’t go as planned, that’s when you’ll be kicking yourself. Cross your fingers and send us pics when it’s done.

Wow! So much hate for Lowe's.

I got nothing against shopping at Lowes, I went there today, but I wouldn’t have them install anything for me. Think about it like this: Lowes has never installed a single floor, they have authorized service providers that do their installations. They’re big companies that pay substandard labor rates and have a decent amount of turnover. In general you’re not getting the cream of the crop when it comes to installers and when you do have a problem it’s a real PITA because you now have to coordinate with multiple companies to get anything done.

I’ll go ahead and say it, stay the hell away from the big box stores!!

They don’t care enough about their customers to do anything beyond take your money.

They don’t pay their sub’s enough to care about your project.

You will be on your own should something go wrong down the line.

If no other choice, buy the carpet you are looking for from them and find your own installer.

Don’t be like the other sheep that get fooled with their “free installation”. They just bury that charge somewhere else.

You might be right. I just received the quote and it's weird and difficult to understand. First, they quoted a completely different carpet that's only $2.78/sq.ft. The one I requested is $4.40/sq. ft. on their website. The room is 19x19, so 361 sq. ft. Also, I told the estimator that there will be a built in credenza that will cover approximately 25 sq ft in the front of the room. And, there is that one step at the entrance way which may require extra carpet to match the pattern.

I'm not sure if we're allowed to discuss pricing. I noticed some forum don't allow price discussion, so I'll leave that out for now. They quoted 635 sq ft of this other carpet for $2.78/sq ft. Not sure where they got this measurement. I understand a little extra carpet is needed, (10%-20%) but that's 75% more than the room size. Excluding the area occupied by the credenza, that's 88% more than room size.

For the padding, they quoted quantity 79. Not sure if that's 79 sq ft or sq yd or packages? Backward calculating it, it's almost $2/sq ft. I emailed them to understand the quote.

Well to be fair a 19X19 room is a little awkward to figure for carpet. You would need two 12X19s to do it (456 Sq.ft.). If it‘s say a 12” pattern match add another 12 sq.ft.. There would be about 5X20 in waste. Plenty to cover your step… If they’re telling you any more than 470 sq. ft. they would have some explaining to do…

Also I’m not sure what 79 refers to with the pad but if it’s sq. yds. It’s almost enough to do the room twice.

And yes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch….Or a free installation.

Do the math, Lowe’s doesn’t give away anything. I think they usually get you with the price of the padding.

This is exactly what I have been trying to say. Since I first heard you were going with Lowes. I am serious about seeing this type of problems and it will just snowball from there and for the next six months you will be stress out trying to get every thing fixed. That is after they got your money upfront. I did subcontract for them for 20 years till they decided to use a big out of control contractor from another state. Then offered for me to work for them. Ha what a joke they just wanted me to solve all there problems in my area for less money then Lowes was paying . Told them what they could do with that! Sorry for Rambling about my experience with Lowes . The point I am trying to make is you will be better off with a local retail store that will truly appreciate your business. And you will be supporting a small Local business. probably with great installers that care about there work after all there name is on it. hope all goes well for you what ever you decide.
