    Who makes your tools?

I buy all Hitachi tools when I can find them. Had very good luck with them. My only complaint is the battery cost. The new 18v batteries are about $70, just for one battery. I can go to Lowe's and get a drill, two batteries, and a charger for about $130. I got one during the holidays on...

    class

I went through the same mess a couple of years ago when I went to finish up a degree. Math (algebra) was the biggest problem. I had to take a placement test, know as the Compass test, to see where I would fit in the math continuum. Took me about three tries to get straight to Algebra. Had I...

So yo want tile over that huh....

There are so many potential problems with that installation, but let's assume for a minute that the things that we don't know about have been done correctly. For instance, let's assume that the joist structure is adequate, the subfloor is oriented and attached properly, and the thinset used was...

So yo want tile over that huh....

I wouldn't touch that mess with a ten foot pole. I'll post some more when I'm not on my phone, but for now, run. Run fast, run far.

    Problems with Avast update

I just wanted to give an update on this issue, for what it's worth. :) First, thanks to Nick and everyone else who tried to help this computer idiot get things going. While I wasn't able to get things going myself, I still appreciate the help that was offered. I ended up giving my...

    Problems with Avast update

I'm sorry, Nick, I've tried every combination of the process I could think of. I re-burned the disc twice to make sure it was done correctly, and I set the boot sequence back and forth between the hard drive and the CD, but I can't get it to boot from the CD. I'm pretty sure the disc is...

    Problems with Avast update

Okay, got the program on the flash drive, got the CD burned. To get to the BIOS utility to boot from disc, I had to hit the escape key. Changed the boot to CD/DVD, then put the CD in and restarted the computer. This is what comes on the screen: "This computer is already in the process of...

    Problems with Avast update

Sorry, Nick. It's been one heckuva week, and I haven't had time to get to it yet. I'm off til Tuesday night, but we're also replacing about 600 sf of wood with 600 sf of tile. So I've been spending all my free time on that. I think (hope) tonight after everyone else is in bed I'll have...

    Problems with Avast update

Free essential, I'm assuming, is the bare bones essential antivirus program that you get for free. I'll start working on this tonight or in the morning. Thanks, Nick.

    Problems with Avast update

I plugged in my old VGA monitor, and can't even get a signal from the CPU on it. It still works on HDMI on the TV, at least up to the point that it starts XP. Then the black screen again. The old monitor is good, I plugged it into my laptop to check it.

    Problems with Avast update

Thanks, I'll try that this afternoon when I get up, and I'll let you know how it goes.

    Problems with Avast update

When you say "OS", I thought you were referring to Windows. You'll have to explain that to those of us that are technologically challenged. It's a cyberpower gamer computer. I haven't tried it with a standard monitor. Since the tv works on everything else I have hooked up to it (XBox...

    Problems with Avast update

Nick Are you having any problems with the latest Avast update? I did one this evening on my 64 bit CPU with windows XP. It called for a restart, so I just did the restart and went to bed. When I got up a few hours later, expecting to enter my password, there was a warning on the screen...

Mayday! Mayday!, Tiling Shower Surround– Metal Flashing Obstruction

How far off the floor is this window? Typically, when addressing a window inside a shower, particularly one that is within the wet area that would normally be waterproofed, all materials around the window frame would be removed and replaced with an approved tile backer. The tile backer that...

    Tile Adhesive

There's only one application for which I'd used mastic, and that's a backsplash, as long as it's not a tub. Floors and showers, never. Too much of a chance of it re-emulsifying and coming loose. I can't remember the last time I even bought a bucket of mastic. I can fill up a five-gallon...

    Pro Leveling System

Some of the good leveling systems would do much more business if their start-up costs weren't so high. Several hundred dollars just for the TLS gun and a bucket of caps, then add 50 cents or so per square foot to each job for the straps. Unless you're really knocking it out every day it...

    Pin Wheel

That looks pretty sharp. Hope you were paid handsomely for it, you deserve it. :) Regarding the crack isolation, I can see your point on not pushing Ditra on customers due to the cost. However, if a crack runs across a room and has a number of tiles spanning it, the cost of Ditra may not...

    Grout sealant problem

Try vinegar and water. It may not do a thing on a silicone based sealer, but it's a cheap product that is easy to get. If it doesn't work, you haven't invested much. I've noticed it peeling sealer off of tile in several instances, however that doesn't mean it will work in your case. A...

    Tile on fresh concrete

Generally, you can direct-bond tile on concrete 28 days after it is poured. There's nothing I'm aware of that requires you to wait longer. There is one exception that allows you to install sooner...much sooner. Schluter Ditra can be installed over concrete as soon as you can walk on it. I...
