Vinyl all the way - it's highly water resistant. Other floor types will expand, contract or stain when it comes into contact with water whereas vinyl is hardcore waterproof! It's hard to scratch and easy to clean - handy when you've got pets! :)
It shouldn't ruin it...vinegar works a treat but I've since been told that this isn't particularly good for wooden floors! You can buy special hardwood floor polishes - apply it with a damp cloth, buff it with a dry cloth :)
