How old was the carpet you took out? It sounds like the black stuff is the old underlay, now pretty rotted. Some carpet underlays were/are made with one or more layers of rubber or latex: both of these dry out and get stiff and powdery over time. Rubber is black naturally; latex sometimes is colored black.
If it were mold, it would have had that distinctive moldy smell. There's no mistaking the smell of mold.
