We have a dent in our wonderful hickory hardwood floor, caused by a picture frame that fell, corner down. It has a matte finish. Can you advise about that internet-suggested trick, of putting a drop of water in the dent, then using an iron and damp cloth, to help expand the wood in the dent. Will that work? I see this dent every day because of its location and the angle of the sunlight, and would like to fix it. Thank you.

People pay 5 bucks a square foot more for distressed flooring looks like that. Looks like a knot, proving that it's real wood. If a wax crayon doesn't fix it.... I'd try not to worry.
Don't try to make it worse by 'fixing it'

I don't know what grade of hickory you have, but I've done repairs on similar hardwood floors, making dings like that, look like a knot. If that doesn't work for you, then maybe a board replacement? Assuming you have some left overs; doesn't look like sand and finish.
