I posted this on another board and was trying to get more opinions.

I have a job coming up where one room has an insert ( 2 rows, different color, same wood) (insert is one foot from the walls).the floor is Mirage 3/4" solid 3 1/4" wide (I think)
I have installed a fair amount of hardwood but have never done a insert.

I think I have the basic knowledge for doing a rectangle insert but this is going to octagon shaped.
I have a bunch of spline material.
I bet a track saw would be the nuts for this.
Can a circular saw and straight edge be used to trim the one side off at the insert?
Any help would be appreciated.
more questions to follow,

Might as well start off doing the harder ones eh Don? :D Your talking about an "inset" boarder, correct? You know they had been done before the existance of track saws.

How about Nick, have you ever done something like this.
Also, where can I order the correct slot cutter for hardwood?
Any place online?

Comon guys , help.
I already told the customer I was a expert at custom border work.
Not really

Update,
I finally did this room this week.
I think it came out pertty sweet , for my first border insert job.
It took alot of planing and and 2 1/2 days to complete.
I decided to install the insert on 3 sides first.
I had to cut each end board and slot it, as I went.
I have never used a router table but, I was thinking it would be easier and safer then my method ( clamping the boards as small as 9" and slotting with a router).

You da man Don......... I wouldn't know how to start something like that.
In the last photo, what's the pink paper for? Looks to me like red rosin paper, but you already have the floor covered with another kind of paper.
