Just a quick tip for when you have to glue down plank on stairs. Some products have attached backings that can be next to impossible to take off clean. This was a stone core plank product, tried the scraper, belt sander, paint thinner, methyl hydrate and just soaking in plain old water. Power planer worked best of all, noisy as hell, but got rid of backing about one board a minute.

I use my Crain 5" scraper with a new blade. It's tricky to find the right angle but when you do I can usually get the pad off in two swipes all in one piece.

Most manufacturers sell their product with or without the attached pad. Wish the sales folk would remember that when selling stair jobs!
