So my wife dropped coals on my wood floor and didn't notice until it was too late.

I know the only way to make it right is to do a board replacement but I'm using this as a chance to learn some concepts and if it's somewhat acceptable I'll be happy.

So this is where it started:

This is where I'm at:

I basically sanded as much as possible but some of the burns are way deep. I'm thinking keeping the black and using them as faux wood knots. But now I'm lost on how to try to somewhat match this finish.

Thoughts?!

Again, I know it won't be close to perfect but I know it can be better than where it is.

Nice improvement tho. Have you tried lightly brushing with a small wire brush or is that just from sandpaper? A wire brush might remove a bit of the burnt softer grain. The missing grain might have to be filled lightly too.
You just might just be better just adding some finish. Who knows. From the looks of it, I'm guessing it's a water based finish. Oil based polys usually amber the wood, more so as it ages. A product from Benjamin Moore called Stays clear might work good. If you have a scrap board, take it to the paint store and have them match the product with that sheen as close as possible. Satin maybe?
When applying finish, mask off boards you don't need to apply finish to....... then peel off the tape as soon as you finish applying a coat of sealer. Straight lines hide better.
