I believe prefinished cherry, about 15 yrs old. Nice wood but not the greatest prefinish. The damage appears to be superficial. Was thinking of using Makita 4” belt sander for 360sqft - flexible on that. What grit required to remove the old finish to prep for oil polyurethane?

Before trying anything, lay a short straightedge across the boards in a lot of areas. With prefinished products, the boards are not on a perfectly flat plane. Any gaps you notice will tell you how much material needs to be removed.
If the edges have a micro bevel, that may disappear here and there and won't look good.
I'd be thinking more like a Scotchbright pad that barely roughens the surface. Then again, your finish would need to be compatible with the factory finish.
Is the material nails down or floating, solid or engineered?

You definitely do not want to touch that with a belt sander.
Is it an engineered floor or solid wood? Is the floor stained or natural wood color.
Maybe he wants a hand scraped look.

Seriously though, a flat sanding job would be impossible with a hand held belt sander.

Swimnswim, you can look at a floor register and tell if you have engineered or a solid wood floor.
