I tried patching a gap with plastic wood a few years ago. Since then it's cracked and I was able to pull all of the pieces out. Now I'd like to do it right. It's a fir floor. Any suggestions on the right stuff to use? Thanks.

Not sure. The floor is over 100 years old. I bought some Elmer's Woodfiller and it looks pretty good. I should have bought the stainable type, though. This is paintable, and I stained it...

Maybe you can look at the boards close up as someone else steps on them to see how much the flex. That would tell you if filler will keep popping out.
The boards grow and shrink summer to winter. Maybe you could add a couple of finish nails to reduce up and down movement before putting on the filler? Put the finish nails at an angle and maybe pre drill (the flooring only), with a 1/16 bit.

Thanks. I will look into nailing them. It worked out pretty well for now.
