OSB Subfloor T&G Noise and More

The townhouse will definitely be rather pathetic at 80 years old. It's rather pathetic now IMHO.

The plate is nailed to the studs from under the plate into the studs.

OSB Subfloor T&G Noise and More

Sure, if I remove ceiling drywall. The sag (gap) isn't across the entire 10' partition wall, and where it does sag, it's about .06 on average (the thickness of a tongue depressor).

Something like this for the verticals.

OSB Subfloor T&G Noise and More

Ok, so I removed 8" of drywall because the screws didn't eliminate all noise at wall. In doing so, I noticed that a non load bearing wall had a gap between the sub and baseplate. And a few of the stud had a gap at the top of baseplate. It's this relationship that's likely causing the noise...

OSB Subfloor T&G Noise and More

Is it common for builders to glue an OSB subfloor T&G seam? I know that gluing the field is common, but not sure about the T&G seam itself.

    Floating Floor Catwalk

Thanks, CJ. If I install .25" underlayment, undercutting the banister base wouldn't be possible. If I scrap the underlayment, it's doable. I'll look at various trims before making my choice -- carpet or LVP.

More noodling. Debating carpet VS LVP like I have in other locations.

I'll noodle that idea. That's not one I've seen before. Many thanks for the suggestions.

OSB Subfloor T&G Noise and More

I used a tie plate over a T&G seam that's making terrible noise which completely eliminated the sound in THIS spot. If I stay with carpet, you can't really feel the bracket with the carpet down. And that's with a fiber pad which is only a quarter inch thick. If I swap out for new carpet with a...

New thought regarding the T&G noise: will the addition of .25 underlayment help tie panels together and reduce the crunching noise at SOME seams?

    Thanks for everything, highup!

    Floating Floor Catwalk

Hi guys, While fixing numerous subfloor issues, I'm considering the replacement of carpet on the catwalk and 2nd floor hallway. That said, the attached picture shows a mockup of .25 underlayment and a piece of the vinyl flooring. Easy enough to swap the carpet for the floating floor, but I'm...

OSB Subfloor T&G Noise and More

So going back to the toenail, the baseplate is 1.50" and the OSB sub is .75, so countersinking a 2.5" deck screw should get the job done if driving the screw into the joist isn't really needed (from what I'm reading here). I have some Hillman Power Pro #9 X 2.5" deck screws that I can use...

OSB Subfloor T&G Noise and More

It's always something, hum? LOL The same thing happened to me (kinda). I buried 2" screws on 90% of the upstairs flooring (a LOT of screws!) to pull the OSB flush with the joists to resolve creaks and such, only to create NEW problems. One thing for certain, if I ever move it will be a RANCH...
