Take a look at the following which describes how the thing works and what can be done (not much) to get your files back. Hint: It appears that you either have to pay the $100 or $300 (they are getting greedy) or wipe your machine and restore. Anti-Virus packages haven't yet figured out how to block it at run time. The good news is that there may be a way to block it but it may only work for the "Pro"/"Business"/"Ultimate" versions of WIndows - i.e. not "Home".

I would do my backups on cloud.

Just make sure guys you keep those external drives disconnected from your computer when done with backups.

If (God forbid) Cryptolocker strikes it'll encrypt your external drives as well.
