What's up with Google here in the last week? It's changed and plus, we have to be inundated with Facebook, Twitter and the likes on every search. Is there a way to opt out of this or are we stuck with it?

You can actually use some foreign Google domains that may not show it. Something like http://www.google.com.hk doesn't even show all that local trash and ads.
Google has been changing so rapidly, but most don't notice it. I made the move to Bing six months ago. At least I can now find many of the better in depth sites (once I get past Ehow) that are disappearing from Google because of the Panda and Penguin changes. They're all about $$ nowadays.
