Bushwhackers were the local pro-south raiders during the civil war. Northern troops burnt our town to the ground during the war. Nevada is about 8000 people, with 23,000 in the whole county.
Our town is around 16,000 and the county probably 55,000 I think.
Wow, I live in a
BIG town!
We have another town bordering us, so in reality the local area is closer to 26,000.
We have a couple of events during the summer. One is just called the Fun Festival, the other is the Blackberry Arts Festival. The later is a downtown event to with vendors selling hand made artsy stuff. It hosts a beer garden and music too.
Fun Festival was started back about 1972 or so by the mayor, who though the town needed an annual community event.
It's probably a lot like yours, with a parade, lots of food and vendors, different bands. It's gotten bigger every year. That said, I don't go to it every year........... those are a social events. ....and Highup isn't one to flock to social events very often.
It would be different if I had a wife and kids.
The Fun Festival starts off with the Prefontain Memorial Run which is an event that celebrates the life of our local hero Steve Prefontain, a local distance runner that set records every place he ran. There are always runners from out of state, or out of the country that come to participate in re running Pre's grueling local 10k practice route.

Pre's college coach Bill Bowerman, along with Phil Knight, founded Nike. Steve became an 'employee' of some sort. I think Bill used Steve to test and give feedback to create the best running shoe available at the time.

Cruise the Coos is kind of the grand finale of the Fun Festival. It's an annual summer car cruise that attracts a lot of classic and custom cars. That event is more to my liking.
