Prior to pouring your floor, buy several bags of Sakrete and use one bag at a time to practice your steel trowel finishing.
To make the surface smoother add water using a misting spray bottle during finishing, you may also need to add dry cement on surface, sprinkle it to help you put a nice slick finish.

I agree! A topic on Floor preparation and conrete flooring would be awesome!! We use some products in NZ that are world wide and it would be interesting to hear how everybody else uses them. Also what tools, diamond blades etc you have found best when removing exisitng residues etc. Do you prepare mainly concrete where your from or do you deal with timber mostly. In Auckland, NZ our subfloors vary from suburb to suburb depending on the year the development happened so we can drive 15mins into mainly concrete subs to another suburb that is Tounge and grove to another which is particle board (chip board)........Makes for a very full vehicle if Floor Preparation is your trade:eek:
