These vacuums have a very hard beater bar. It can abrade the carpet yarn and also take out the twist so the carpet "uglies" out. Kirby vacuums have also been found to damage some carpets. Most mills recommend the use of vacuums without a beater bar. Carpets that are vacuumed 2 or 3 times a week, as suggested, can be kept clean with a suction-only vacuum.
 
The ones that seem to cause the most problems are the non-adjustable head ones, the brush goes down till it encounters enough resistance that it can no longer drop. This WILL eat the tips of the fibers.
