what happens if I have more gap between floor and vertical obstruction (sill plate or drywall)? I have half inch gap between floor and perimeter. Instructions has 1/4inch gap. I understand less than 1/4 inch gap causes issues but what will more cause?

Absolutely no problem with more gap other than you have more gap to cover.
