Why did they pay you? They charge people for carpet and pad if they plan to maker a profit. I'm missing something in the interpretation.

Because they resold the scrap at a higher price Hi.. With no money outlay ..
I can't see recycling as profitable unless the recycle manufacturing place is relatively close to large populations.

Since rebond is already recycled material, you would be recycling it for the second time.

I get 7/16 8 pound pad for .17 a sf. for you yard guy's that is 1.53 a yd. free delivery with 5 roll order. 1/2 inch is only 1 cent more.
Local Carpet One sells Karastan 7/16 8lb. It's rebond too but has a heavier coating on the top along with Karastan printed all over it. Not pet proof but s much better coating than most pads. Should I guess they pay somewhere close to that when they order 50 rolls. I'm west coast if that makes any difference. Shipping must be higher here on the coast than inland like on Interstae 5.
