I have a great Sony Vaio laptop with Win 7 installed. I really like the feel and ease of maneuvering. Recently, the little spring loaded door that is used for the various size SD cards has sprung, and the door could be heard floating inside the computer. This AM I heard the door begin to hit the fan, and you could tell it was about to bind up the fan permanently, so I attempted to split the case to get the door out of the way of the fan. For some stupid reason, although I removed about a dozen micro screws, I was unable to open the case or remove the door. I put it back together and now I no longer hear the door bouncing inside. Problem is I also don't hear the fan spinning. Now after 2-3 minutes of use, the computer shuts down completely, as if it is overheating.

Any ideas what I should do? Take it to a computer repair guy? Pat it on the head and toss it and buy another one?

I'm currently using a win 7 H/P, but is it very uncomfortable to use and I am going crazy with misspelled words.

Na, I'm stubborn. I was successful in splitting it apart. The issue was that the CD/DVD player needed to be unscrewed and pulled out, allowing three hidden screws to be exposed. I also saw a huge 32? pin connection had become unplugged. I pulled out the broken piece of plastic and verified the fan was free spinning. I plugged it in, and it went through the entire start up, and I heard the fan whirling like no tomorrow..... then it shut down. I rebooted it, whirled around and went to a full start up, then it died. Now, I'm thinking the battery is so dead that it is shutting down from lack of power? Hell, I spent 2 hours, got it all running, and this.... Anyone have any ideas or thoughts? If I take it to a computer forensics guy, is it possible to get a few pics that I never transferred as a back up to a CD?

Yeah, after plugging it into a Ethernet cable, it seemed like it was going to work and spent about 5 minutes cleaning what was reported as corrupt files, got 65% done, then shut down. On restart, it shut down after about 30 seconds. I still hear the fan whirling around and lots of hot air coming from the computer. Do you think it overheated and fried? I'm afraid it is dead?

See if you can boot into Safe Mode with internet connectivity and Download and run Speccy . Looking for the Temps to see if it is over heating.

Could also be bad sectors in your HD to . I would try and back up the drive before you do anything else .

Bad sectors have a tendency to spread, so this drive, even if fixed won't be reliable anymore. Run hard drive diagnostics:

Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn:

to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here:

Yeah, I cleaned it inside. I threw it in the washer and set it on the gentle cycle :D

Yeah, it was pretty dusty, wiped gently and blew lots of lint from the fan motor. I then secured all the connections.

I'm done dealing with it for the next week. I will resume after our cruise tomorrow. I'll be gone for a week.

You all be safe!

Have fun Hav , We'll work on it when you get back.

For sh!ts and giggles, I plugged in my dead laptop last night and for a few minutes, I saw the green charging light lit up. I repositioned the cord and now I no longer get the charging light. I am now wondering it the power cord/battery finally took a crap? Today, I will search out all my friend's laptops to see if they have a compatible power cord to see if this was my problem?

Well, I got the plug to work, went through the start up, it said something about failed permissions, then shut down. It was too quick to read the fine print, but there is obviously a huge failure.
