Just started new wood company in CA and didn't expect worker's comp to cost about 20% of wages. Is this the experience of others in the trade?

We have ACC here and they know how to charge as well. Its a % on your earnings. Layers are tied in with the builders. I don't know of any layers doing things that builders do. I can't remember the last time I fell off a roof
I just paid about NZ$3700 for last year. I think US$ about 80 cents NZ

Thanks. I found an agent able to get to be about 11% of wages. Much better but still crazy high.

As a stair builder I just got a quote for 36% for unskilled labor and 15% for journeyman. I've gotten quotes from several places. If one is quite a bit lower than the others I'd be worried that they have you under a wrong classification. I've been told that lately there has been an increase in the amount of wc fraud cases due to the down turn in the economy which is driving up the premiums.
