Everything as a effect . Is his lap just running slow on the net ?, how about software ?

If you want you can have him post on here . I'll fix him up . That's what I'm here for .

He's 69 and this is his very first confuser. Someone gave him this laptop after it was used for some time. I've ran some goodies like Avast, SAP, Mal-bites, ccleaner and defraged it, but no improvements. In a day or 2 I'm going over there and see how much of his ram is used up and while I'm there, I'll see if I can get in touch with you on it. He knows zero about confusers. After thinking about that for a while, that might not be a bad place to be.:D

I'll see what I can find out.

Thanks Nick

Copy these links to a flash drive and run them while you are there .

The memory will check to see if any of the ram is bad .

Run this one last , it will flush the DNS [Dynamic Network Server]
Plus it will renew the ISP address.

That can also be used if you can't got online .

Really should start from the beginning , like when i do yours .

PS: don't run CCCleaner on any computer anymore . It takes out files it shouldn't . All registry cleaners are dangerous .

Also ,Before you start running any program you should do a system restore point first .

Do you know what version of windows it is ?
See what he has on there for a firewall, and antivirus.
Taking those hogs off will free up a lot of memory .

It's a good software , But it can still take out files it shouldn't

If you are going to use it i think they still have the mild version.

I don't use any cleaners myself . I have other programs i run and delete what i want .

Did a system restore. It's an HP running Windows XP Pro. Like I said, he knows nothing of confusers. No active firewall or antivirus. There's an icon showing McAfee on desktop, but not activated. I tried to download the sites you supplied, but after downloading, there's no sign of them. When asked, I saved them, but can't find them anywhere. Looked in downloads and on desktop....nothing. You still want to tackle this?:D

Seems to me that a good idea, if possible, would be to go back to factory settings and start with a new slate. But I'm all ears Nick. You D man.

PS This is in Firefox.

Look in my documents. You downloading from his confuse , or to a thumb drive .

Sorry for the late response , I been working on my confuser all afternoon. can't get on line except in safe mode . still running software . can't find anything .

In FF Open it > go to tools >Options > you will see where it is saving them to . check browse and check desktop. then you wont have to go searching for them .

Well Nick, I've tried downloading what you sent me and this confuser will not finish a download. I can get it to desktop or my documents OK, but when I try to open them, it says,"Could not be saved because the source could not be read".

I tried Avast and it says, "Not a valid Win32 application". This thing will not complete any downloads. I also tried SAS to see what might be causing problems, but it won't let it install. I tried this in safe mode but no go there either. What the hey???

PS. His download speed is .30 and up is.27 Ping 793

Download RogueKiller for 32bit or Roguekiller for 64bit to your Desktop.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/RogueKiller_d6983.html

Close all the running programs
Windows Vista/7 users: right click on RogueKiller.exe, click Run as Administrator
Otherwise just double-click on RogueKiller.exe
Pre-scan will start. Let it finish.
Click on SCAN button.
Wait until the Status box shows Scan Finished
Click on Delete.
Wait until the Status box shows Deleting Finished.
Click on Report and copy/paste the content of the Notepad into your next reply.
RKreport.txt could also be found on your desktop.
If more than one log is produced post all logs.
If RogueKiller has been blocked, do not hesitate to try a few times more. If really won't run, rename it to winlogon.exe (or winlogon.com) and try again

p22002970.gif Create new restore point before proceeding with the next step....
How to: http://www.smartestc...nt-all-windows/

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (MBAR) from HERE http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/malwarebytes_anti_rootkit.html

Unzip downloaded file.
Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log-xxxxx.txt and system-log.txt

Would like to see the DDS log
