Was at a friends house yesterday that we installed some decent grade plush type carpet about two years ago and noticed yarns/strands of carpet sticking up about an inch higher than the rest, but still connected. Is there a name for this and what would cause it? It's about a 12 x 20 room and maybe 80 of these things sticking up.

It's called sprouting. Not that uncommon in plush styles, but can indicate a defect. I would test a scrap for tuft bind and trim the sprouted tufts. Also look at the pulled yarn for signs of stress as in elongated fibers, or rough ends. Dog In the home?

There are lots of terminology that is slightly different across the nation. Most mean the same thing, but generally cause little confusion. Another example of this is "corn rowing" in some areas across the US this is what gauge lines are called, while in reality they are not the same thing. Corn rowing is a form of matting usually in low density long nap construction. Visible gauge lines are due to the tufting process and usually if the consumer is complaining they are considered excessive.
