Saw Stop mandate being discussed

I’m all for it! If my saw dies tomorrow I would replace it with a SawStop. Which model I’m not sure of yet but definitely a SawStop, specifically because it has ‘the technology’. Shit, the only reason I don’t already have a SawStop because my current saw hasn’t died yet.

I can't afford a $600 saw, nor can a lot, probably most homeowners and DIYers. It's mandates gone mad. None of their business. Might as well mandate plastic bubbles to wear if you exit your house or car.

Some mandates are because corporations can’t be trusted to do anything else but turn a profit for themselves. I know it’s gonna raise the price of table saws but I’m still all for this one.
Just for giggles, how often do you buy a table saw? I’m on my 3rd table saw over the course of 25 years. I bought my current saw that I’m using back in ‘08 or ‘09. That’s 15+ years of use and all I’ve done is maintain it and change the blade, and I use my saw daily. If that were a $1500 saw that would break down to $100/ year, $8.33/ month, $0.41/ day (not counting weekends). Doesn’t seem so bad after you break it down.

on this Saw stop technology all or nothing approach (FDF false dilemma fallacy ) and clearly see the answer as described in that video. Education around pre-existing blade guards and maybe walking back a few steps on the mandating ?

Wood working has inherent risks. If you are too dumb/lazy/busy/preoccupied/careless (fill in your own ____, then maybe you should give up this dangerous occupation and sit home, living on government assistance.

Is that because government bureaucrats make things more complicated ?

( unfortunate ) and an anti FDF comment, that could guide to possible improvements…..Since wood working has risks and insurance companies are all about minimizing risk, maybe they could put some up front skin in the game, or back end discounts on workers compensation and disability insurances.

No blade guard, I do have a riving knife which is like half a blade guard.
It won’t prevent you from touching the blade but it does prevent most kick back. 
I think most everyone that has a table saw removes the blade guard. I have 2 tables saw in my garage that I use and the guards are removed.
Since wood working has risks and insurance companies are all about minimizing risk, maybe they could put some up front skin in the game, or back end discounts on workers compensation and disability insurances.
I would expect to see an up charge for table saw usage rather than a discount for not using one.
I threw my blade guard away the day I bought my saw. I rolled like that for years until I saw one of my coworkers get hit with some kickback because the table saw they were using didn’t have a blade guard or a riving knife. I went home and ordered a replacement riving knife and put it back on my saw.
Even though I have a riving knife installed on my saw, that’s still no guarantee that I couldn’t lop off a couple fingers, it just helps prevent certain kinds of kickback.
I have an app on my phone that stops the blade right before it hits flesh. I cant remember the password though so......
I think about the negative impact of this possible mandate on the individual. Then I think about the positive impact that employees across the country will benefit from because of this possible mandate. I hope the greater good would outweigh my own personal inconveniences.

I would think that being a union guy that you would have seen plenty of SawStops on your commercial jobs?? I’ve only seen a couple out in the wild before. One was on a commercial job, because it was a commercial job. The other time was some old retired MFR that had a SawStop, a Kapex and a bunch of Festool stuff and he was out peddling his time for cheap. Not really a realistic situation so I don’t count that sighting.
I saw sawstop demo'ed in Vegas. Isn't it trash once it is triggered. Seems to me it was a $400 bill to replace it.
You need a new cartridge and a new blade. Cartridges are currently right about $100 and who knows what a blade will run you, $35 to $200 depending on your blade. Dado blades require a different cartridge and a whole new dado stack set if you trigger it. That could easily top $400. All I can say to that is you gotta pay to play.
I suppose OSHA might require that equipment nowadays. I never came across SawStop on a site. I was only vaguely aware of the technology. We installed wood pretty rarely. The shop had one very old table saw in beat up condition. Mostly we'd hump our own. My small, portable Crafstman table saw was older than the shops before the motor blew out. I replaced it with something that looks like this. It weighs about 375 lbs not including the stand.
I started out almost 30 years ago with a $99 Delta chop saw, a $99 Delta table saw and a $20 Skil jigsaw. Just a quick look at Amazon and you can get a 10” Metabo chop saw for $119. Not bad for 30 years later. A cheap Chinese table saw will run you just under $200. I didn’t look at how cheap you could get a jigsaw for but in theory you could be in business with saws for a few hundred bucks. Won’t be Dewalt or Milwaukee but making money is making money, right.
So what’s the work around if the cost of a table saw goes through the roof? Track saw, skil saw, jigsaw? Isn’t there some cheesy skil saw on a track that was meant for flooring? A lot of LVP is score n snap so you technically don’t need a table saw for that. My work around is/ was my jigsaw hooked up to a HEPA vac. I can cut inside which you can’t do with a table saw. How many rip cuts do you really have anyway? I just made sure I was stocked up on jig saw blades and went to town. The extra time I spent cutting rip cuts was saved by me not having to run back n forth to the saw which is downstairs, outside and across the street

I like the way David Hunt budgeted and I just ran across one of his replies that I saved from TFP , maybe I’ll try to share it.

I'm proposing that all new saws be made where those two items cannot be removed without destroying the saw.
In addition, all saws must have lasers that measure the thickness of material being sawn and the blade will self adjust to no more that 1/4" above the work piece.
I'll also introduce a bill that forbids selling older "unsafe" saws at garage sales and second hand stores.
Anyone caught on a worksite using a non approved saw will face a $1250 fine from OSHA.
.....almost forgot. You must wear a safety stop cord. It attaches to your belt and a key pin inserted into the saw allows it to start. If you step more than 2 feet from the saw, the pin pulls out, shutting off the saw.
Basically, I want only contractors to be able to afford saws. Homeowners shouldn't be allowed to save money and do their own stuff.
Wow, that's heavy. I didn't figure the saw and heavy base would weigh that much. Not tossing that onto the tailgate be yourself.
